The House of Representatives has resolved to enact a legislation aimed atestablishing a regulatory commission to streamline the activities of donor agencies.This was sequel to a debate on the general principles of a Bill for an act to establish a donor agencies regulatory commission, to check unscrupulous activities of some international donor agencies in the country,Leading the debate, the sponsor Mr Idem Unyime, stressed the need to ensure that funds from international donor agencies coming into the country are properly checked.The lawmaker explained that many donor organizations coming under the pretence of assistance might have some ulterior motives and intention.Mr Uyime alleged that over twenty trillion naira came into the country through an international donor agencies.Contributing to the debate, the Chairman House Committee on Public Account, Wale Oke, noted that creating another agency with the mandate to mornitor and scrutinse money from international donor organization into the country would amount to duplication of functions.According to him, the ministry of Finance, Office of the Auditor General among others have internal departments that could investigate foreign donors bringing money into Nigeria.The speaker Mr Femi Gbajabiamila stressed the need for the establishment of the agency with the mandate to investigate funds from donor organization and what they are meant for.The speaker also advised the lawmakers, who spoke against the bill to consider the idea behind it instead of outrightly condenming the bill.COV/IBRAHIM SHEHU
