All Farmers Association of Nigeria AFAN, says Sokoto state have the capability of generating two billion naira monthly revenue from agricultural sector alone.
Chairman Sokoto state chapter of the association Alhaji Jamilu Sanusi disclosed this on a courtesy call to the governor of the state .
Alh. Jamilu Sanusi explained that if properly harness, through the establishment of Commodity Board, the state have the potentials to improve its economy through levy collection on farm produce in the state.
According to him, levies on onion bags, garlic, grains and other farm produce would attract huge revenue to the state .
The AFAN Chairman advised Sokoto state government to come up with modalities in all the agricultural value chain and other sector of the economy with a view to placing Sokoto state on an equal footings with other states in the country for socio economic development of the state.
Alh Jamilu stressed that with a viable commodity board, the state stance a chance to access Central Bank stabilization funds and other supporting windows.
According to him, these would enhance food and agricultural allied production, commercial activities and provides job opportunities for youth in the state.
Alh.jamilu also urged the state government to establish soil laboratory in the state for farmers to have good knowledge of their farms’ soil conditions, nutrients needs and other inputs for maximum harvest.
He further appealed to Gov Aliyu to facilitate more training on best agricultural practices in order to increased the quality of yields in the state.
The Chairman noted that with the present Federal Government decision on removal of subsidy in petroleum products, the state must extend palliatives to farmers through supply of solar powered water pumping machines, provision of organic inputs in a bid to achieving the desired objectives.
Responding, Gov Ahmad Aliyu, pledged to established soil laboratory and revival of commodity board.
The governor said government would engaged experts to look into the suggestions noting that his administration is always ready to partner groups and development partners that have direct bearing to the development of the state.
