Kaduna State Government says it has taken proactive steps towards tackling Sexual and Gender Based Violence-SGBV.
Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Sale Shu’aibu disclosed this at a one day sensitization workshop organised by the International Federation of Female Lawyers-FIDA in collaboration with International Alert Nigeria and the UK-aid.
Barrister Sale Shu’aibu explained that hitherto, it took the State Ministry of Justice two weeks to render advice on criminal matters-including SGBV, but with the coming of the present administration, the ministry renders legal advice within a week.
The Commissioner expressed the State Government’s readiness to key into the far reaching resolutions of the workshop with a view to addressing the alarming cases of SGBV.
Also speaking, Kaduna State Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs Aisha Abdu Mohammed expressed worry over the increasing cases of SGBV.
She called on the State Government and relevant stakeholders to do more towards finding lasting solutions to the menace.
In a message, Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Mr Paul Nyulaku Benshima noted that the event was a significant stride in a joint commitment to confront and eradicate cultural norms that underpin SGBV.
He added that the initiative was crucial in the on-going project towards promoting stability, access to justice and accountability in North-West Nigeria.
The theme of the workshop is:Legal and social protection of women and girls against gender based violence.
